MAY GARDENING TIPS 2013
Avoid late frost damage to peaches, apricots and nectarines by covering them overnight with horticultural fleece and carefully remove the fleece during the day.
Hang pheromone traps in apple trees to help reduce codling moth numbers.
Sow French and runner bean seeds directly into well prepared soil.
After all risks of frost has passed you can plant outdoor tender vegetable such as tomatoes, courgettes, sweet corn and beans – keep them well watered and fed.
Remove the dead flower heads of daffodils and tulips then feed them with a general purpose fertilizer – allow the foliage to die back naturally.
Cut back hardy fuchsias to new growth, feed with Vitax Q4 at 4ozs per square yard to encourage strong new growth.
Check lawns for moss and weeds, apply a combined moss / weed and feed if required.
Take care not to disturb nesting birds in shrubs and hedges.
Check all roses for early signs of aphids, black spot and mildew. Apply a combined fungicide and insecticide such as Rose Clear 3.
Ensure all newly planted trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants do not dry out, water well during the morning or early evenings. Apply a mulch of bark chippings will help to suppress weeds and keep the ground moist.
